Legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey has announced his departure from Red Bull after 19 years to join Aston Martin as the team’s managing technical partner. The announcement was made by Aston Martin team owner Lawrence Stroll, who expressed his excitement about having Newey on board. Newey has committed his long-term future to Aston Martin and will also become a shareholder.
Newey, considered one of the greatest technical masterminds of his generation, aims to turn Aston Martin into world champions. He will work alongside the team’s drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso. Stroll described Newey as the best in the world at what he does and expressed his pride in having him join Aston Martin.
This move comes after Red Bull announced Newey’s departure earlier in the year, with him stepping back from design duties to focus on the final development of the RB17 hypercar. Aston Martin, currently fifth in the constructors’ championship, hopes that Newey’s expertise will help them climb the ranks in the competitive world of Formula One.
Newey has a storied career in F1, winning numerous championships with different teams. He was instrumental in transforming Red Bull into a dominant force in the sport, with Sebastian Vettel winning four consecutive titles under his designs. After a brief period of dominance by Mercedes, Red Bull reclaimed their spot at the top with Max Verstappen winning the 2021 championship.
Despite recent setbacks for Red Bull, including Verstappen’s winless streak, team principal Christian Horner denied that Newey’s departure has impacted their performance. It was reported that Newey’s decision to leave was partly influenced by allegations of inappropriate behavior made against Horner, which were later dismissed after an internal investigation. Aston Martin sees Newey’s arrival as a significant step towards their goal of competing for world championships in F1.
