The North Carolina Senate recently passed House Bill 10, which includes budget adjustments as well as requirements for sheriffs to cooperate with ICE and funding for Opportunity Scholarships. The bill passed 27-17 and is now in the hands of the House Rules Committee for further discussion. Senator Danny Britt emphasized the importance of ensuring that sheriffs comply with immigration laws to prevent violent individuals charged with crimes from being released back into the community. The bill also allocates funding for various education and healthcare programs, as well as infrastructure improvements in Chatham County and Randolph County.
One of the key components of HB 10 is the full funding of the Opportunity Scholarships Program, which aims to address the critical shortfall for families seeking school choice in the state. In addition, the bill authorizes a new program to expand high-speed internet in rural communities to promote connectivity. The Senate also inducted Senator Bob Brinson to fill a seat after a resignation earlier this year and voted to override Governor Roy Cooper’s vetoes on multiple bills. The bill is expected to be brought to the House floor for a vote following the House Rules Committee meeting on September 11. Overall, HB 10 addresses a range of issues including immigration enforcement, education funding, and infrastructure development in North Carolina.
