Zurich Councillor Faces Expulsion and Termination of Employment After Shootout at Auction Poster
Sanija Ameti, a Zurich city councillor from the Green-Liberal party, has come under fire after firing a sports pistol at an auction poster of a 14th-century Madonna and child painting and posting images of their bullet-ridden faces on social media. The councillor has since apologized for her actions, stating that she did not realize the religious content of the poster at the time.
In response to the incident, the Green-Liberal party has initiated expulsion proceedings against Ameti, with her consultancy employer terminating her employment on Monday. The images of the shooting have continued to circulate in Swiss media, sparking controversy and condemnation from various parties, including the Swiss bishops.
Ameti, who is known for her firearms expertise and cybersecurity background, has faced backlash for her past stunts and actions. Despite seeking police protection due to threats following the incident, she has acknowledged her actions as “absolutely stupid” and has asked for forgiveness.
This controversy comes at a critical time, with national and local referendums approaching on September 22, including one on biodiversity protection supported by the Green-Liberal party. Ameti’s actions have drawn attention away from these important issues, emphasizing the need for accountability and respect for religious sensitivities in public discourse.
