Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has warned that Hezbollah will “pay an increasing price” following a series of device attacks on its members in Lebanon and Syria. In response, Israel has intensified attacks on southern Lebanon, launching dozens of air raids on towns in the Jezzine area. The Israeli military stated that their airstrikes targeted rocket-launchers and other infrastructure. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has vowed retaliation, saying the attacks crossed “all red lines”.
The escalating tensions have raised fears of a wider conflict in the region, with Israeli leaders hinting at a potential larger military operation against Hezbollah. Nasrallah has accused Israel of undermining the support front of the Palestinian people and resistance in Gaza. The White House has called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to “lower the temperature” in the region, while maintaining a strong stance against Iran-backed threats.
A preliminary investigation by Lebanese authorities found that the devices used in the attacks were implanted with explosives before arriving in the country and were detonated via electronic messages. The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has intensified since Israel’s assault on Gaza in October, with both sides exchanging cross-border fire and escalating tensions. The recent attacks have resulted in casualties, including the deaths of 37 people and the wounding of nearly 3,000 individuals. The situation remains tense, with the potential for further escalation between the two sides.
