The mayor of Atlantic City, Marty Small Sr., and his wife, La’Quetta Small, who is the city’s school superintendent, have been indicted on charges related to the mistreatment and abuse of their teenage daughter. The couple allegedly physically and emotionally abused their daughter in December 2023 and January 2024, with Marty Small facing charges of terroristic threats and aggravated assault in addition to endangering the welfare of a child. The parents denied any wrongdoing at a news conference in April.
Constance Days-Chapman, the principal of Atlantic City High School, was also indicted for failing to report the abuse allegations made by the daughter to authorities, as required by law. Days-Chapman allegedly met with the parents in a car outside their home instead of reporting the abuse to the necessary authorities.
The allegations came to light when a non-school entity called a hotline about the abuse two days after the incident was reported to Days-Chapman. The daughter was 16 years old at the time of the second disclosure. Both Marty Small Sr. and La’Quetta Small continue in their positions as mayor and school superintendent, respectively.
The charges against the Smalls and Days-Chapman are allegations, and they maintain their innocence. The case is ongoing, and the school district has not responded to requests for comment.
