South Carolina inmate Freddie Owens scheduled for execution

Freddie Eugene Owens, a deeply troubled South Carolina inmate set to be executed by lethal injection, has written chilling letters from death row. In some letters, he threatens the ones he loves with violence, while in others he shows his vulnerability and describes himself as fragile. Owens, who was convicted of killing a woman during a robbery in 1997, has maintained his innocence and fought his death sentence.

Owens’ childhood was marked by neglect, abuse, trauma, and psychological difficulties. His abusive father and neglectful upbringing left lasting scars that his family and experts believe played a role in his criminal behavior. Owens, who converted to Islam in prison, changed his name to Khalil-Divine Black Sun-Allah.

In his letters, Owens expresses regret for his actions and anger at the world that brought him up. Some letters show a sinister side, with threats of violence towards those he loves. His attorneys argue that Owens should not receive the death penalty due to his troubled childhood, young age at the time of the crime, and brain damage.

The state of South Carolina rejected these arguments, stating that Owens’ execution should proceed as scheduled. Owens’ attorney chose lethal injection as his method of execution, as his religion forbids him from choosing his own death. The looming execution has sparked debate over whether the death penalty is a proportionate punishment for Owens’ crimes, given his traumatic past and young age at the time of the offense.
