In the latest Carolina Journal poll of likely voters in North Carolina, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris are virtually tied in the race for the presidency. Trump leads with 45.6% of the vote, closely followed by Harris at 45.3%, with 6% of voters undecided. The gap has narrowed since August.
North Carolina is a key battleground state, crucial for both parties to secure victory. While Republicans emphasize the state’s importance, Democrats have multiple paths to reach the required 270 electoral votes without North Carolina.
The poll also reveals changes in down-ballot races, with Democrat Josh Stein leading the race for governor, and the GOP leading in congressional races. Most down-ballot races have tightened in favor of both parties.
Respondents identified inflation, immigration, jobs/economy, and abortion as the most important issues in the 2024 election. A majority also supported a state constitutional amendment limiting voting rights to US citizens aged 18 and above.
The poll, conducted from September 15-16, surveyed 600 likely general-election voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.99%. Political science professors emphasized the importance of North Carolina in this election, with both campaigns closely monitoring the state’s outcomes in the lead-up to the election.
