White House responds to USA TODAY’s report on rape kit backlog

The White House responded to a USA TODAY investigation on the ongoing failures to test thousands of rape kits, emphasizing President Joe Biden’s commitment to protecting women from violence throughout his career. The investigation found little progress in addressing the backlog of sexual assault kits in the nearly 10 years since the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative was launched. Biden, who championed the Violence Against Women Act in the 1990s, announced the initiative in 2015 to allocate $350 million to test backlogged kits and bring rapists to justice. While 100,000 kits have been tested and 1,500 convictions have been made, uneven progress has been seen across agencies, with nearly half of the convictions coming from just two agencies. The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, stated that she was unaware of the investigation and had not yet discussed its findings with the president. The administration remains committed to addressing the issue and ensuring victims of sexual assault receive justice and closure.
