Briner leading Harris in NC state treasurer race

A new poll by Carolina Journal conducted by Cygnal shows Republican candidate for state treasurer, Brad Briner, with a slight lead over Democratic opponent State Rep. Wesley Harris. The poll indicates voters have confidence in Briner’s qualifications for the position. Briner, a UNC-Chapel Hill and Harvard Business School graduate, has extensive experience in finance and investment. His opponent, Harris, has a Ph.D. in economics and has served in the General Assembly since 2019. Business North Carolina recently raised questions about Harris’s lack of stock ownership and real estate assets over $10,000, which may be relevant to the treasurer’s role in managing the state’s investments.

Both candidates are critical of current State Treasurer Dale Folwell’s handling of the pension plan, which they say is underperforming. Folwell has decided to leave the office to run for governor, having lost in the Republican primary. Harris plans to invest more of the pension plan to boost returns and negotiate with healthcare providers to lower costs. Briner, on the other hand, wants to improve the performance of the pension plans to free up funds for essential services.

The state treasurer in North Carolina is the sole fiduciary of the state’s pension fund, a model that Harris wants to maintain while Briner wants to move away from it, believing small groups make better investment decisions. The race for state treasurer in North Carolina is heating up, with both candidates highlighting their qualifications and vision for managing the state’s finances.
