NC hospital group experiences change in leadership amidst challenges

Pressure is mounting on HCA’s management of Mission Health in Asheville, leading to a change in leadership as a response. The new CEO, Greg Lowe, will replace Chad Patrick at Mission Health. Concerned parties are skeptical about the impact of this change, with State Sen. Julie Mayfield expressing doubt about significant changes. The nurses union also remains skeptical, hoping for a quick settlement on a new contract.

Buncombe County has filed a lawsuit against Mission Health, alleging ambulance practices and mismanagement of the emergency department have cost taxpayers $3 million. The lawsuit claims deliberate understaffing and tactics to inflate healthcare costs. HCA has until Oct. 11 to respond to the complaint.

Dogwood Health Trust and an independent monitor identified potential areas of noncompliance by HCA with its purchase agreement. If they cannot come to an agreement, the matter will go to court. The previous monitor identified noncompliance in 2020, but HCA was able to resolve the issues through discussions. The current instances of potential noncompliance will be addressed through talks between Dogwood and HCA.

With the ongoing disputes, uncertainties remain about the future of leadership at Mission Health and the resolution of legal and labor issues. The community and stakeholders are closely watching for any meaningful changes and resolutions.
