Venezuela’s government refuses to accept EU’s decision to recognize opposition leader as victor of election

The European Parliament has voted to recognize Edmundo González as the legitimate President of Venezuela, following disputed elections in July. The Venezuelan government has rejected this decision, with the National Assembly approving an agreement to repudiate the Parliament’s resolution. The Electoral Council, considered loyal to the sitting government, had declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the presidential elections.

Maduro criticized the European Parliament’s decision, noting their previous support for Juan Guaido, a former opposition leader. The vote in the European Parliament came after González claimed he was coerced into signing a letter acknowledging his defeat by government officials in order to leave the country. His arrival in Spain has strained relations between Madrid and Caracas, with calls for diplomatic and commercial relations with Spain to be severed.

The European Parliament’s decision signals support for opposition claims of victory in Venezuela’s disputed elections, despite the Electoral Council’s declaration of Maduro as the winner. The situation remains tense as both sides refuse to back down, with international recognition playing a key role in determining the legitimacy of Venezuela’s government.
