Protestors associated with Students for Justice Palestine at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill tore down the American flag outside the armory and replaced it with the Palestinian flag. The group vandalized walls with graffiti and marched through campus ending at the ROTC building where they replaced the flag. Campus Republicans condemned the act, stating that peaceful protests should be used for positive dialogue. This incident follows a trend of flag demonstrations on campus, including a previous attempt to replace the American flag with the Palestinian one. The American flag was replaced, and the ROTC building was repainted after the protest. An individual was attacked during the demonstration, and a counter-protest with “Jesus saves” signs also took place. The chaotic scene at UNC follows a spring semester with similar incidents across college campuses. This incident highlights the need for respectful and constructive dialogue to address complex issues.
