Hezbollah confirms death of commander Ibrahim Akil in Beirut airstrike: Middle East crisis live


Hezbollah has confirmed the death of Ibrahim Aqil, a top military leader of the group who was killed in an Israeli airstrike. Aqil was wanted by the US for his role in the 1983 Beirut embassy bombing. Along with Aqil, several other members of the elite Radwan unit were also killed in the strike. The group also confirmed the death of Ahmed Wahbi, a commander who oversaw military operations of the Radwan unit during the Gaza war.

In total, 14 people were killed and 66 injured in the airstrike on a residential building in the southern suburbs of Beirut. The strike came amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with Israel also targeting Hamas members with explosives inserted into pagers and walkie-talkies that resulted in the death of at least 42 people.

Israel has submitted challenges to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over jurisdiction and arrest warrant requests against its leaders for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The White House has expressed concern over the violence in the region, urging Americans not to travel to Lebanon.

The UN has warned against further violence, fearing a regional conflict that could have devastating consequences. The UK and US are making preparations to evacuate their citizens from Lebanon as the situation remains tense. President Joe Biden has expressed the possibility of a ceasefire deal in Gaza despite escalating tensions in the region. Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has postponed his trip to the US due to security concerns in the north of the country.
