US soldier Travis King sentenced for desertion in North Korea | Military News

United States soldier Travis King has been released from confinement based on good behavior and time served after being sentenced to 12 months for charges including desertion and assault. King, who fled to North Korea, pleaded guilty to five charges as part of a plea deal accepted by a military judge in Fort Bliss, Texas.

The soldier, who had faced at least 14 charges filed by the US Army under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, was stationed in South Korea and crossed the border into North Korea during a civilian tour of the Korean Demilitarised Zone. He was immediately taken into North Korean custody, but was returned to US custody in September 2023.

King’s lawyer stated that the soldier faced challenges in his life, including a difficult upbringing, exposure to criminal environments, and struggles with mental health, which compounded the hardships he faced in the military. The US Army’s Office of Special Trial Counsel confirmed King’s guilty plea as part of a fair and just result that reflects the seriousness of the offenses committed.

Overall, King’s release was a result of a plea deal, where he was sentenced to confinement, reduction in rank to private, forfeiture of pay and allowances, and a dishonorable discharge. With time served and credit for good behavior, King is now free and will return home. King’s case highlights the complexities and challenges faced by individuals in the military and the legal system, as well as the importance of addressing mental health issues and providing support for service members facing difficulties.
