A Florida sheriff deputy, Leslie Boileau, was arrested after he accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend, Polina Wright, while they were cleaning and dry firing their guns at their home. Boileau had provided Wright with training that involved pointing guns at each other, which he described as “sloppy.” During one scenario, he forgot that the rifle was loaded and accidentally fired a shot that hit Wright in the head. Boileau expressed remorse to investigators, stating that he did not want the tragedy to occur. He was subsequently fired from the Marion County Sheriff’s department and arrested on a manslaughter charge.
The incident has prompted the Ocala Police Department to work with the State Attorney’s Office to ensure justice is served, according to Chief Mike Balken. Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods expressed support for the investigation, emphasizing that the actions of one officer impact the entire law enforcement community. Despite tens of thousands of law enforcement officers performing their duties admirably each day, tragic incidents like this one highlight the need for accountability and responsibility in every aspect of their work.
As of Sunday morning, Marion County Jail records did not show Boileau’s booking. The Marion County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of proper firearm handling and training to prevent accidents and tragedies like this from occurring.
