A 20-year-old American college student, Brook Cheuvront, was found dead after she went missing while hiking Table Mountain in South Africa. Cheuvront had left to climb the mountain alone, and her tracking app failed to update after she departed. Her friends reported her missing when she did not return, prompting a search operation involving park rangers, Wilderness Search and Rescue members, and a City of Cape Town aircraft. Cheuvront’s body was found on the mountain’s slopes, and her cause of death is under investigation.
Cheuvront was described as “kind-hearted” and “brilliant” by family and friends. She was a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was in South Africa for an internship at the University of Cape Town. Tributes shared online highlighted her kindness, selflessness, and intelligence.
In response to the tragedy, SANParks released safety tips for hikers, including doing activities in groups, choosing routes carefully, allowing enough time, informing someone of your route, wearing appropriate clothing and footwear, and saving emergency numbers in your phone. These guidelines are recommended for hikers in general to ensure safety while exploring outdoor areas.
