Authorities in Alabama are searching for multiple gunmen who opened fire in Birmingham’s entertainment district, killing four people and injuring 17 in what police describe as a “hit” targeting one person. The gunmen opened fire in the Five Points South district, with three people pronounced dead at the scene and a fourth dying later at a hospital. The victims were identified as Anitra Holloman, Tahj Booker, Carlos McCain, and Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr.
Four of the injured have life-threatening injuries, and over 100 shell casings were recovered at the scene. Police believe the shooters may have modified their weapons with Glock “switches” to convert them to automatic weapons. Investigators are still unsure of the motive and the number of shooters involved. Federal agencies are assisting in the investigation.
This incident is the latest in a series of shootings that have plagued Birmingham this year. In July, another shooting at a nightclub left four people dead, and three people, including a 5-year-old child, were killed in a separate incident. Alabama State legislators have attempted to ban modified weapons like Glock switches, but efforts have not been successful.
Officials are urging witnesses to come forward, offering a reward for information leading to an arrest. Alabama Rep. Terri Sewell condemned the violence, calling for action to break the cycle of violence and make communities safer. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in the city and the need for stronger measures to address it.
