A man suspected of a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump acknowledged his plot in a note found by prosecutors. The man, Ryan Wesley Routh, wrote that the attempt failed in a package he gave to a witness before his arrest. In a court document, prosecutors revealed that Routh had geolocated his cellphones near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and golf course in Florida in the weeks leading up to the incident.
In a separate development, former national security officials endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris over Trump, citing his threats to democracy and lack of remorse for trying to overturn the election. Harris has seen a surge in favorability among voters and is viewed as the candidate most likely to bring change.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson is working on a short-term funding deal to avert a government shutdown without including Trump’s demand for legislation against non-citizen voting. The deal also provides emergency funds for the Secret Service to protect both Trump and his opponent, Harris, before the election.
In response to a report on Routh’s motivations, prosecutors found a book authored by Routh discussing Ukraine and his apology for a “mistake” in electing Trump. Routh also left a note offering $150,000 to anyone who could “finish the job” of assassinating Trump. The FBI found other evidence linking Routh to the attempted assassination, including a handwritten list of Trump’s appearances and critical notes on foreign governments.
