The United Nations General Assembly has approved a blueprint called the “Pact for the Future” in an effort to bring together the world’s nations to address 21st-century challenges. These challenges include climate change, artificial intelligence, conflicts, inequality, and poverty. The 42-page pact challenges leaders to turn promises into concrete actions that will make a difference in the world. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres emphasized the need for decisive steps to update and reform international cooperation despite the current turbulence in the world.
The pact was adopted at the Summit for the Future, which aimed to bring multilateralism back from the brink. UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang highlighted that the commitments in the pact reflect the collective will of member states and must guide actions to promote international peace and security, implement Sustainable Development Goals, foster inclusive societies, and ensure technology is used for the common good. International leaders such as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai were in attendance at the summit.
The goal of the pact is to address pressing global issues through collaborative efforts and actions among nations.
