Former Harrods CEO, James McArthur, has spoken out about the “abhorrent” behavior of late owner Mohamed Al Fayed but denies knowledge of sexual abuse allegations. McArthur, who led the company in 2008, expressed his shock at the recent accusations against Fayed and his sympathy for the victims.
While McArthur was not aware of any sexual abuse during his time at Harrods, he acknowledged that Fayed’s behavior was often unprofessional and dysfunctional. He stated that if he had known of any abuse, he would have taken action.
Harrods is conducting an internal review, including possible staff involvement in the allegations. A former employee claimed that a current manager failed to investigate her complaint about Fayed’s inappropriate behavior. Harrods stated that its board has established a committee to address the allegations and is cooperating with the Metropolitan police in their inquiries.
The store emphasized that its settlement process for victims is being overseen by independent external counsel to ensure fair and swift outcomes. Harrods is committed to supporting the victims and ensuring that justice is served.
The ongoing investigation and cooperation with authorities demonstrate Harrods’ commitment to addressing the allegations and providing a safe and supportive environment for employees and customers. The company is focused on ensuring accountability and transparency in response to the serious accusations against its former owner.
