Voter demographics shift as absentee ballot requests decline by 80%

The 2024 election in North Carolina is seeing a significant shift in absentee ballot requests compared to previous cycles. While overall requests have dropped by over 80% since 2020, more young adults, particularly women, are requesting mail-in ballots this year. The North Carolina State Board of Elections has received over 207,600 absentee ballot requests for this election, with Democrats leading at 38%, Republicans at 23%, and unaffiliated voters at 38%. Young women, in particular, have doubled their share of mail-in requests. Additionally, recent polling suggests that Democratic candidates are gaining momentum in key races, with Josh Stein leading Mark Robinson in the race for governor and Donald Trump and Kamala Harris neck-and-neck in North Carolina for the presidency. The return rates for these mail-in ballots are expected to remain around 70%, similar to previous years. The increase in absentee ballot requests from young women and unaffiliated voters could have a significant impact on the outcome of the 2024 election in North Carolina.
