Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a powerful speech at the UN Security Council, calling for an end to the war in Ukraine based on United Nations rules. Zelenskyy labeled Russia’s war in Ukraine as “insane” and expressed concerns about Russia’s reported plans to target nuclear plants in Ukraine. He urged the UN to force Russia to abide by the UN charter and highlighted the atrocities being committed by Russian forces in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy is set to present his full “victory plan” to US President Joe Biden on 26th September, as well as to presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. The plan is expected to lay out the terms on which Ukraine is willing to negotiate with Russia, but does not include any proposed concessions. Zelenskyy has indicated that Putin is not currently ready to begin negotiations.
During his visit to the US, Zelenskyy also addressed the UN General Assembly and visited an arms ammunition factory in Pennsylvania. He is scheduled to meet with President Biden and the presidential candidates later this week. Trump has previously hinted at providing less support to Ukraine than the Biden administration, raising concerns about the future of US-Ukraine relations.
Zelenskyy’s impassioned plea at the UN Security Council highlights the urgent need for action to end the war in Ukraine and bring peace to the region. It remains to be seen how his “victory plan” will be received by world leaders and whether it will lead to meaningful progress in the ongoing conflict.
