North Carolina’s Problem Gambling Helpline has seen a significant increase in call volume since online sports betting became available in March. The helpline, operated by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, offers services 24/7 and in over 200 languages.
According to Amanda Winters, the Problem Gambling Administrator, overall call volume increased by 79%, with specific clinical calls rising by 34%. People seeking treatment for gambling issues increased by 28%, and those looking to block gambling apps on their devices rose by 82%. Engagements with the Call to Change program, aimed at helping people with behavior change, increased by 20%.
More people are calling the helpline about sports betting than the state lottery, with calls related to sports betting increasing by 88%. The program’s budget has been increased to $3 million for FY 2025 to support education and treatment programs for gambling addiction.
Partnerships with organizations like East Carolina University and Birches Health aim to provide innovative treatment programs. The program also offers youth prevention grants and education to help raise awareness about problem gambling among young people.
Efforts to provide responsible gambling messaging during events like the March Madness tournament show a commitment to promoting responsible gambling practices in North Carolina. The Problem Gambling Program has been working with the lottery since 2006 to provide services related to gambling education and treatment.
