Harris rejects Trump’s idea that Ukraine should give up territory for peace

US Vice President Kamala Harris joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in condemning the idea of Kyiv giving up territory to Russia for peace, calling it “dangerous and unacceptable.” Harris criticized Republican candidate Donald Trump’s push for Ukraine to make deals to end the war, stating that such proposals are akin to surrendering to Putin. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine seeks a lasting and just peace, not just a freeze in the conflict.

The statements come amidst high stakes for the war effort in this year’s election, with Trump facing criticism for his approach to US assistance for Ukraine and his praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump has defended his efforts to stop the ongoing conflict, but his proposed meeting with Zelenskyy in New York has raised questions.

Zelenskyy presented plans in Washington to end the conflict by improving Ukraine’s military capabilities and leverage in negotiations. While there was no movement on lifting restrictions on using Western weapons during his visit, President Joe Biden announced increased support for Ukraine in the form of missiles, drones, and ammunition.

EU Council President Charles Michel urged China to reconsider its support for Russia and uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter. The European Union reiterated its commitment to supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary in pursuit of a just and durable global peace. The international community’s focus remains on finding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine while holding Russia accountable for its actions.
