Former President Donald Trump has claimed that Google is illegally manipulating search results to display bad stories about him and good stories about Vice President Kamala Harris. He threatened to ask the Justice Department to prosecute Google if he wins the 2024 presidential election. Trump’s claims were based on a study by the conservative group Media Research Center, which found that Google favored Harris over Trump in search rankings.
A Google spokesperson denied the claims, stating that search results are based on constantly changing news articles online and that Google does not manipulate results to favor any candidate. Trump has a history of trying to prosecute his rivals, including Harris, President Joe Biden, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. As president, Trump attempted to order the Justice Department to prosecute Hillary Clinton and James Comey, but these efforts were resisted by officials in his administration.
Despite the Supreme Court ruling that presidents are immune from criminal prosecution for alleged conduct involving discussions with Justice Department officials, Trump is currently facing federal criminal charges related to election interference. He has pleaded not guilty and is contesting whether a trial can move forward in light of the Supreme Court ruling. If elected president once again, Trump has indicated that he will prioritize appointees who are loyal to him and his agenda.
