Western NC School Systems Adjust Following Helene

Multiple public school systems in Western North Carolina have been severely impacted by the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene, leading to closures and challenges in resuming normal operations. More than 205,700 students across 453 schools in 25 counties are affected. While some systems hope to open soon, others remain closed indefinitely due to damage to buildings and ongoing supply and transportation issues.

In Asheville, although school buildings were spared from damage, the city school system is closed indefinitely. Schools are being used as emergency shelters and distribution centers, with T-Mobile providing Wi-Fi and charging stations. Mission Health is utilizing the Asheville High School football field for medical transport. The New York State Incident Management Team is distributing water from Asheville Middle School.

Similarly, other school systems in Western NC, such as Henderson County and Rutherford County are facing challenges with power outages and connectivity issues. Rutherford County Schools are closed through Thursday with remote learning options. Catawba County schools have experienced significant damage, with some families still without power.

Despite these challenges, communities are coming together to support each other. Schools are providing essential services like meals, charging stations, and supplies to those in need. The road to recovery for these school systems will be long, but with support from the community and authorities, they hope to resume normal operations soon.
