Tropical Storm Helene caused widespread flooding and landslides in Western North Carolina, leading to a federal disaster declaration for multiple counties. Homeowners, renters, and small business owners affected by the storm may be eligible for assistance from FEMA. The deadline to apply for aid is Nov. 27, and residents can apply online, through the FEMA app, by phone, or in person at a Disaster Recovery Center.
FEMA assistance is meant to help survivors meet immediate needs for basic repairs, not provide complete compensation for losses. Applicants who are denied assistance have up to 60 days to file an appeal. Rumors circulating on social media about FEMA seizing property or providing inadequate aid are false, and FEMA has addressed these claims on their website.
The federal government has committed more than $210 million for Helene recovery in the Southeast, with over $32 million earmarked for North Carolina. Additional aid, such as Transitional Sheltering Assistance and Starlink devices, is available for residents in need. As the region continues to recover from Helene, FEMA is also preparing to assist areas affected by Hurricane Milton.
