The United States is investigating a leaked pair of highly classified intelligence documents describing Israel’s preparations for a retaliatory strike on Iran. The documents, reportedly prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, detail U.S. interpretations of Israeli Air Force and Navy planning based on satellite imagery from mid-October. Israel has been planning a response to a recent ballistic missile attack carried out by Iran, intensifying its offensive in Gaza and Lebanon after the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
House Speaker Mike Johnson mentioned that an investigation is underway regarding the leak, with the Pentagon also looking into the reports. While officials have acknowledged that the leaked documents are authentic, they likely only represent a portion of the information the U.S. has on Israel’s planning. The documents describe air and missile handling activities of the Israeli Air Force, as well as covert drone activity likely related to a strike on Iran.
President Joe Biden has expressed understanding of when and how Israel may attack Iran, but also sees an opportunity to end the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence have not yet commented on the leak. The investigation is ongoing, with both U.S. and Israeli military activities closely monitored.
