Janusz Olejniczak, the renowned Polish musician known for his piano work in the Oscar-winning movie The Pianist, has passed away at the age of 72. His family announced that he died of a heart attack on Sunday.

Olejniczak, born in 1952, began his piano education at the age of 6 and went on to study in Warsaw, Paris, and Essen. He gained international fame at just 18 when he won the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Throughout his career, he was known for his exceptional sensitivity and interpretation of Chopin’s music, earning him recognition worldwide.

In addition to his work in film, Olejniczak served as a juror for the Chopin piano competitions and was highly respected as a teacher. His unique talent and sensitive soul were praised by his colleagues and friends, including composer and conductor Jerzy Maksymiuk.

Despite facing health problems, Olejniczak was described as having great plans and a determination to continue his musical pursuits. The National Frédéric Chopin Institute expressed deep sadness over his passing, highlighting his contributions to the world of music and his impact on generations of musicians.
