Former Lithuanian president warns that if the West gives in, Putin will have the opportunity to prepare for new aggression.

Former Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė recently addressed the ongoing threat posed by Russia under Vladimir Putin in an interview with Euronews. She emphasized the importance of investing in the defence industry, particularly as Lithuania continues to navigate its foreign policy partnerships with the European Union and Ukraine.

Grybauskaitė noted the potential formation of a centre-left government in Lithuania following the recent legislative elections, stating that the country will maintain its pro-European, pro-NATO, and pro-Ukrainian stance. Internal security concerns, particularly in the context of NATO and the EU’s eastern flank, remain at the forefront of political discussions in the country.

The former president warned against making compromises with Russia, particularly in relation to the conflict in Ukraine, as she believes it would only embolden Putin and pave the way for further aggression against neighbouring countries. Grybauskaitė highlighted the importance of Europe rapidly investing in the defence industry to address the evolving security landscape, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming US elections.

Grybauskaitė’s remarks came during her participation in the Estoril Conferences in Portugal, where she discussed diplomacy and international cooperation alongside other notable political figures. As Russia continues to pose a threat to Europe under Putin’s leadership, Grybauskaitė emphasized the need for decisive action and strategic investments in defence capabilities to safeguard against potential aggression.
