Taiwan Donates $300K to Aid North Carolina Recovery from Hurricane Helene
In a significant gesture of international solidarity, Taiwanese officials presented a $300,000 donation to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund today, aiding recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene. This donation was made during a visit to the state, reinforcing the longstanding cultural and economic ties between North Carolina and Taiwan, which has the second-largest Taiwanese community in the Southeast U.S.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting the determination of residents to rebuild following the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene, which resulted in 98 confirmed fatalities and an estimated $53 billion in damages. "It’s heartwarming to receive this donation from Taiwan and the support of its people for ours," Cooper stated.
Taiwan’s support is especially poignant given its own experiences with natural disasters. Director General Yi-Lung Wang from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta remarked, "Taiwan has experienced similar tragedies and understands the profound sense of loss that follows typhoons and earthquakes. It is this shared experience that motivates us to stand in solidarity with the people of North Carolina during this difficult time."
Brian White, board chair for United Way of North Carolina, acknowledged the overwhelming global support received, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration during this crisis. He noted that funds are being directed towards nonprofits providing essential supplies like food, water, and cleaning materials to storm victims.
