Foreign ministers from 43 Union for Mediterranean states gathered in Barcelona to discuss regional challenges, with EU’s foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell condemning Israeli attacks on UNIFIL in Lebanon. Borrell called for sanctions against those responsible for Israeli settlers in the West Bank and two members of the Israeli government. Spain’s foreign minister also reaffirmed commitment to UNRWA, a vital organization for Palestinian refugees. Jordan’s foreign minister emphasized the importance of international law in preventing violations in the region.
Nasser Kamel, the UfM secretary general, highlighted the need for a two-state solution in the Middle East, emphasizing the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended a memorial service in Jerusalem for fallen soldiers and civilians, reiterating the mission of victory and the return of all hostages to Israel.
Tensions in the region have escalated with Israel defending its actions in south Lebanon as necessary for self-defense against Iranian-backed militants. Israel has long accused UNRWA of being infiltrated by Hamas militants, further complicating the situation.
The UfM meeting was an opportunity for member states to address critical issues in the region and reiterate their commitments to international law and humanitarian aid. The discussions underscore the ongoing challenges and complex relationships in the Mediterranean region, with differing perspectives on key issues such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
