The University of Texas at Austin’s Texas Politics Project conducted a final election poll on October 18 to gauge registered Texas voters’ opinions on key issues before Election Day. The poll revealed that former President Donald Trump is leading with 51% of the Texas vote, while Vice President Kamala Harris trails five points behind. In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz holds a seven-point lead over Rep. Colin Allred, although young voters show a preference for Allred. The economy is a top concern for Texas voters, with many feeling that both the state and national economies have worsened in the past year.
Regarding immigration and border security, respondents ranked immigration as the most important issue for the state and the second most important issue for the country. Views on immigration differed among Liberal, Democratic, Republican, and conservative voters.
When it comes to abortion, 45% of Texans viewed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022 as a good thing, while 40% viewed it as a bad thing. In an August poll by the Texas Politics Project, 49% of Texans believed that abortion laws should be less strict than they currently are.
Overall, the Texas Politics Project’s poll provides valuable insights into the perspectives of Texas voters on important issues ahead of the upcoming election. Students are encouraged to participate in early voting at designated locations on campus before Election Day on November 5th.
