Internationally acclaimed actor Adil Hussain and renowned Bollywood playback singer Papon have joined forces with other artists to protest the felling of ancient trees along the banks of the Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati. Papon expressed his concern over the loss of heritage due to the city’s development projects, emphasizing the need to preserve old trees and historic structures. Adil Hussain criticized the lack of imagination in urban planning and questioned why authorities prioritize tree felling for development. Singer Joi Barua also supported the protestors, stressing the importance of protecting the heritage represented by these trees and calling for alternative plans to be considered.
This protest comes in the wake of several incidents of illegal tree felling elsewhere in India. In Chennai, six 20-year-old trees were cut without permission, sparking an investigation by officials. Similarly, in Nagpur, authorities were ordered to submit records on the unlawful felling of 181 trees for the Ajni station project, despite previous halts.
The actions of Adil Hussain, Papon, and other artists in Guwahati highlight a growing concern for environmental conservation and heritage preservation in the face of rapid urban development. Their voices add to the global call for sustainable practices and responsible planning to protect our natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
