Larry Lee Savage Jr., a former Republican candidate for the 5th Congressional District, turned himself in after being charged with stealing ballots during a public test of voting machines in Madison County, Indiana. The test involved pre-marked ballots being manually calculated and then run through voting machines to ensure accuracy. Two ballots went missing during the test, and surveillance footage showed Savage putting them in his pocket. He then whispered to another attendee that he had “f—– up the count.” The missing ballots were found in Savage’s car during a search warrant, one Republican and one blank. Savage claimed he took them because he thought they were not real ballots, but text messages suggested otherwise. He faces charges of destroying or misplacing a ballot and theft.
Savage, who describes himself as a “MAGA candidate,” ran in the Republican primary against Rep. Victoria Spartz earlier this year. The manufacturer of the voting machines described the ballot theft as sabotage. The state GOP condemned Savage’s actions and law enforcement is pursuing justice. An initial court appearance has not yet been scheduled and Savage does not have a defense attorney listed. Authorities are monitoring the situation as it unfolds.
