Russia has criticized the US for sending antipersonnel mines to Ukraine to aid its defences against Russian forces, accusing the Biden administration of prolonging the war. The Kremlin spokesperson stated that President Putin is open to negotiations, despite rejecting the option of freezing the conflict. The US decision to provide Ukraine with mines has been condemned by a global anti-landmine group, with the US urging Ukraine to use the weapons only on its own territory to avoid civilian casualties.
The Biden administration also allowed Ukraine to use long-range weapons to strike deep inside Russian territory, escalating tensions between the two countries. Reports have emerged that Putin is willing to discuss a ceasefire deal with incoming US President Donald Trump, potentially freezing the war along the current front lines and discussing a carve-up of annexed regions in Ukraine.
Ukraine, known as the most mined nation in the world, has been seeking international assistance to clear landmines planted by Russian forces since the start of the war in 2022. Prime Minister Shmyhal called on the global community to increase support for demining efforts in the country at a meeting in Switzerland. The situation in Ukraine remains tense, with ongoing conflict and efforts to secure peace through negotiations.
