La Tejana, a small restaurant in Washington D.C. co-owned by McAllen resident Ana-Maria Jaramillo, is making waves in the culinary scene with its Michelin-grade Tex-Mex food. Specializing in authentic breakfast tacos, the restaurant has garnered significant popularity in the nation’s capital, leading to its recognition with a prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand award.
Jaramillo, originally from Monterrey, Mexico, and now based in McAllen, Texas, was introduced to breakfast tacos in her hometown, which inspired her to bring this Tex-Mex staple to D.C. Together with her husband Gus May, Jaramillo opened La Tejana as a brick-and-mortar joint in 2022, offering a unique dining experience with a focus on high-quality ingredients and affordability.
The restaurant’s success has been further highlighted by its Michelin award, recognizing the exceptional quality of its food. Known for its superb flour tortillas and a variety of breakfast tacos, La Tejana also caters to vegan and vegetarian customers with a selection of sauces to enhance the dining experience.
In addition to her role at the restaurant, Jaramillo leads a successful professional life as a pediatric speech pathologist and adjunct professor at George Washington University, where she works with bilingual children in the local immigrant community. Through La Tejana, she and May have not only brought a taste of Texas to D.C. but have also created a welcoming space for diverse communities to come together and enjoy delicious Tex-Mex cuisine.
