Governor Greg Abbott issues third executive order of the week aimed at China

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued a series of executive orders aimed at combating threats from the Chinese government and protecting Texans of Chinese descent from harassment and intimidation. The latest order calls for the creation of a task force to study vulnerabilities in government systems and infrastructure to prepare for potential cyberattacks by China.

Abbott’s first two orders established a hotline for victims targeted by the Chinese Communist Party, prohibited state agencies from doing business with companies owned by foreign adversary nations, and strengthened background checks on employees with access to critical infrastructure.

These actions come in response to Operation Fox Hunt, a global espionage effort by China to repatriate dissidents for punishment, as well as illegal Chinese operations within Texas. The FBI’s Houston office has been warning residents about these activities and urging potential victims to come forward.

State Representative Gene Wu, who was born in China and immigrated to the US, has spoken out about the ongoing intimidation of Chinese immigrants in Texas by the Chinese government. While he appreciates the governor’s support, he is concerned that the orders may lead to increased suspicion and hatred toward members of his community.

Wu stresses the importance of considering the potential impacts of these orders on the Asian community and urges caution to prevent the escalation of hate crimes. As Abbott continues to take action against Chinese government threats, the focus remains on safeguarding the safety and security of Texans.
