North Carolina Republican Considered for Leadership Position at Trump’s USDA

Trump Considers Ray Starling for Agriculture Secretary, Aiming to Reassure Agricultural Interests

President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet selection process has garnered attention, particularly regarding his choice for Secretary of Agriculture. Insiders indicate that Ray Starling, currently general counsel for the North Carolina Chamber, is emerging as a potential nominee who could allay concerns within the agricultural community.

Starling is well-acquainted with both the USDA and Trump’s administration, having served as chief of staff to former Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and advised the Trump campaign on agricultural issues. His extensive background includes legal roles in both the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and as general counsel for U.S. Senator Thom Tillis, R-NC.

After Trump’s election victory, the transition team’s surprising cabinet selections have stirred unease, especially regarding the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the FDA. Many in the agricultural sector view Kennedy as a potentially disruptive figure, prompting a search for a candidate like Starling, whose “mainstream credibility” and trusted status could provide stability.

Sec. Perdue praised Starling, stating he has a strong reputation in the agricultural community and brings valuable experience to the USDA role. Larry Kudlow, former director of the National Economic Council, also highlighted Starling as a trusted adviser on agricultural matters.

With the Agricultural Secretary position being one of the last to be confirmed during Trump’s initial term, the appointment of another North Carolinian, Ray Starling, could mark significant continuity in agricultural leadership under the new administration. As speculation continues, Starling’s nomination may ultimately serve to reassure a sector facing uncertainty.
