McColl, South Carolina Mayor George Garner II died in a car wreck on November 26 while being pursued by sheriff’s deputies. The crash occurred in Mechanicsville, Darlington County, around 2:40 p.m. Garner, who was driving a 2007 Chevy Tahoe, veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a Volvo tractor trailer. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was also injured and treated at the hospital.
According to Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee, Garner was being pursued by a Marlboro County sheriff’s deputy at the time of the crash. The pursuit was reportedly initiated to ensure Garner’s wellbeing and was not related to any criminal activity. Marlboro County Sheriff Charles Lemon clarified that deputies were following Garner based on a concern raised by his wife.
The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division confirmed that Garner is the subject of an ongoing investigation. Last month, the entire police force of McColl resigned due to alleged unwanted and malicious behavior. The situation in McColl continues to develop, and more information is expected to emerge.
