Several high-ranking campaign staffers for Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee for North Carolina governor, have resigned after controversial comments made by Robinson surfaced last week. In remarks on an adult entertainment website years ago, Robinson referred to himself as a “Black Nazi,” expressed support for slavery, and made transphobic comments. He also admitted to inappropriate behavior such as “peeping” on women in public gym showers as a teenager.
Among those who have left Robinson’s campaign are his general consultant, campaign manager, finance director, and deputy campaign manager. Robinson has denied making the comments, despite his full name being attached to them on the website. Critics have pointed out that Robinson has a history of making offensive statements, including calling LGBTQ+ people “filth,” being an anti-Semite and Holocaust denier, and making misogynistic comments.
Despite calls for him to withdraw from the race, Robinson is continuing his campaign for governor against Democrat Josh Stein, currently the state’s attorney general. The incumbent governor, Democrat Roy Cooper, is term-limited, and North Carolina elects its governor and lieutenant governor separately.
Robinson, who has drawn the admiration of former President Donald Trump, was not invited to a recent Trump rally in the state and was not mentioned during the event. Robinson is facing pressure to step down, but he is resisting and remaining in the race. The controversy surrounding his campaign has raised concerns about the impact of his inflammatory comments on the governor’s race in North Carolina.
