New cutting-edge charger, the size of a suitcase, could reduce truck emissions in Europe

Danfoss, a global engineering giant, is leading the charge to decarbonize supply chains in Denmark by using onboard chargers in eight electric trucks. These trucks, which are six meters long and three meters high, are powered by Danfoss’s technology in collaboration with Volvo.

The onboard chargers, which are the size of a big suitcase, are essential in managing how the battery of the electric vehicles gets charged as they store energy as direct current (DC) while most public and home charging systems provide alternating current (AC) electricity. The onboard chargers provide up to 44 kW of charging power, higher than typical chargers used in passenger EVs.

The trucks are able to charge their batteries during loading and unloading times, allowing them to operate almost continuously, with longer charges needed on weekends. Danfoss states that their fleet of electric trucks has helped reduce emissions by 10 to 15 percent in Denmark.

Heavy-duty vehicles account for a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions from EU road transport, but the use of electric trucks is increasing in Europe. Danfoss’s commitment to sustainability is showcased through their efforts to reduce emissions and drive the adoption of electric vehicles in the logistics industry.

As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, companies like Danfoss are leading the way in reducing carbon emissions and promoting the use of clean energy technologies in supply chains.
