Sean P. Grayson to be released on bail following involvement in Sonya Massey shooting

The Fourth District Appellate Court has reversed the detention order of former Sangamon County Sheriff deputy Sean P. Grayson, who was charged in the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey. Grayson will soon be released with conditions, pending a hearing to determine the least restrictive pretrial release conditions. The Circuit Court will set a date to consider these conditions, which may include home confinement or monitoring. Grayson’s attorney argued he is not a flight risk, citing health complications. The Appellate Court did not weigh in on what the conditions might be. Grayson is currently held in the Macon County Jail. Massey, a Black woman, was shot after calling 911 about a possible prowler. The DOJ has launched an investigation against the sheriff’s office for concerns about interactions with Black people and those with behavioral health disabilities. Other issues need to be addressed before Grayson’s release, including a potential petition for leave to appeal to the Illinois State Supreme Court. The shooting, captured on a bodycam, has sparked national attention.
