Record snowfall in and around Seoul has caused widespread travel disruptions and resulted in the deaths of at least three people in South Korea. The heavy snow on the country’s second day of record snowfall has led to fatalities, with incidents such as a collapsing golf practice net and a falling tree causing fatalities in Gyeonggi province.
The snowy conditions have also resulted in a 53-vehicle pile-up in Wonju, Gangwon province, with 11 reported injuries. Flights and ferry services have been cancelled and disrupted, with up to 40cm of snow accumulating in parts of Seoul by midday. Incheon airport experienced delays and cancellations, with the city government deploying thousands of personnel and equipment to tackle the snow.
Schools in Gyeonggi had the option to close as needed, and Seoul broke a historic record with its heaviest November snowfall since records began over a century ago. Power outages were reported, with the unusual snowfall attributed to warmer seawaters meeting cold air currents.
The neighboring North Korea also experienced significant snowfall during the same period. The impact of the snowstorm has been substantial, with precautions being taken to minimize further disruptions and ensure the safety of residents and travelers in the affected regions.
