The North Carolina State Board of Elections has not certified the results of four legislative races, including Senate District 18. Additionally, the state Supreme Court race between Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs and Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin is currently under recount and protest. There is a motion for the recusal of Siobhan Millen from protests due to a conflict of interest, as her husband is a partner in the law firm representing Riggs. The NCGOP Communications Director has expressed concern about the impartiality of the state board due to this conflict.
Despite challenges, a record number of ballots were cast in North Carolina during the recent election, with a voter turnout of 73%. The certification process for the election results has been ongoing, with county boards certifying their results prior to the state election board meeting. A post-election audit found few inconsistencies in the vote totals, providing confidence in the accuracy of the election results.
Karen Brinson Bell, the board’s executive director, commended state and local election officials for their hard work in making the election possible. Despite the impact of Hurricane Helene, which affected 25 counties, North Carolina was able to deliver voting services and achieve a high voter turnout. The certification process included authenticating the 2024 general election results and issuing election certificates. The board acknowledged the efforts of all those involved in conducting a successful election amidst challenging circumstances.
