North Korea is making strides to strengthen its global standing by prioritizing relations with Russia, aiming to break out of isolation and embrace the idea of a “new Cold War.” Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov met with his North Korean counterpart for talks in Pyongyang, highlighting the expanding military cooperation between the two countries. Belousov emphasized that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement signed by President Putin and Kim Jong Un in June aims to stabilize Northeast Asia and reduce the risk of war, including nuclear weapons.
During the meeting, both sides stressed the importance of trustworthy contacts between their leaders in strengthening Russian-Korean relations. North Korea expressed its commitment to stand on a common front with Russia to safeguard international peace and security. This visit comes in the backdrop of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol meeting with a Ukrainian delegation to discuss countermeasures against North Korea’s reported deployment of troops to support its war effort in Ukraine.
The United States and its allies have raised concerns over North Korea sending troops to Russia, with reports suggesting over 10,000 soldiers being deployed and engaging in combat. North Korean leader Kim has been focusing on strengthening relations with Russia to break free from isolation and enhance its international standing as part of its strategy amidst the changing global dynamics. The partnership between North Korea and Russia is seen as a significant move in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the region.
