Grant Awarded to North Carolina Students for Feminine Hygiene Products

Burlington Police have made an arrest in connection with a deadly crash that occurred six weeks ago. Jeanette Alston surrendered to authorities and is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated felony death by vehicle. The crash, which took place on October 25th at the intersection of Highway 70 and Beaumont Avenue, resulted in the death of 57-year-old Jonathan Pickard. Speed and alcohol were reported to be factors in the accident.

In Greensboro, a person was killed after being struck by a train at the intersection of East Market and English Streets. The individual was sitting on the tracks when the incident occurred. Their identity has not been released at this time.

Two separate house fires are currently under investigation. One fire in the Millers Creek community of Wilkes County resulted in a double-wide mobile home being engulfed in flames. A firefighter sustained minor burn injuries but is expected to recover. The fire is suspected to have started in a bedroom due to an electrical issue. Another firefighter in Mebane suffered minor heat-related injuries during a house fire response on Oakwood Street, but is also expected to make a full recovery.

In more positive news, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has been awarded a grant of $5,000 by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to provide feminine hygiene products for students in the district. This funding aims to reduce stigma and educational barriers caused by the lack of access to essential products, supporting the district’s commitment to equity and student well-being.
