Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan’s unexpected withdrawal from the speaker’s race has caused political waves in Texas. While some Republicans celebrated the news, others like Rep. Brian Harrison believe that Phelan’s departure is necessary but not enough. Harrison argues that the Chamber needs complete reform to align with the will of Texas voters, who overwhelmingly favor Republican leadership.
Harrison was among those who criticized Phelan, particularly for presiding over a session that he believed was the most liberal in Texas House history. He also blamed Phelan for the failure of school vouchers last year. However, Harrison cautioned that Phelan’s replacement could potentially be someone just as liberal, if not more so.
The battle to replace Phelan highlights ongoing divisions within the Texas Republican Party. The House Republican Caucus is expected to meet soon to decide on a replacement. While Rep. David Cook won a straw poll conducted by conservative Republicans, Rep. Dustin Burrows has also announced his candidacy for speaker.
The official election for speaker will take place on the first legislative session day in 2025. Phelan, although not seeking re-election as speaker, will remain a member of the House. With only five weeks left until the legislature reconvenes, the key question remains who will become the next speaker.
