Best-selling author Robert Beatty has released a new book that resonates with Western North Carolina readers. His latest book, Sylvia Doe and the 100-year Flood, tells the story of a young girl facing catastrophic flooding in her hometown of Asheville, N.C. Beatty, known for his Serafina series, visited Barnes and Noble in Asheville for a book signing on Dec. 8.
Although the book was completed earlier this year, recent events such as Hurricane Helene striking the region on Sept. 27 have sparked conversations about fiction from the book and facts from real-life experiences. Beatty mentioned that discussions about the book have helped kids, teachers, and adults in the community come to terms with the aftermath of the flood, providing them with perspective and easing some of the emotions surrounding the event.
Having lived in Asheville for two decades, Beatty is donating all royalties from the new release to the Helene Rebuild Collaborative, a local initiative aimed at assisting those most affected by the hurricane. The book’s timely release and connection to recent events have struck a chord with readers, prompting discussions and raising awareness about the impact of natural disasters on communities. Beatty’s commitment to supporting his local community showcases his dedication to giving back and providing aid to those in need.
