In a surprising move, Dade Phelan, the current Texas House Speaker, announced on Friday that he is withdrawing his bid for re-election, paving the way for a new leader to be chosen by his fellow Republicans for the upcoming legislative session. Phelan, who will continue to serve in the Texas House of Representatives, expressed his support for the nomination of a candidate who can unite the House and maintain conservative leadership.
The House GOP will meet on Saturday to select their speaker candidate by secret ballot, with a two-thirds majority required for victory in the first two rounds. Phelan’s withdrawal has not changed House Democrats’ readiness to work with any speaker candidate willing to prioritize the needs of Texans over politics.
Phelan faced criticism during his term for failing to pass a school choice bill and allowing the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton, who was ultimately acquitted. His decision to step down comes after a tough primary challenge that led to a narrow victory in a runoff election.
Known as Dade, Phelan is a real estate developer with a degree in government and business from the University of Texas. He is married to Kim and has four sons. Phelan’s legacy as Speaker will be remembered as a mixed one, with supporters and critics both voicing their opinions on his tenure.
